Tasty Vibrator Facts You Might Not Know

facts about vibrators you may not know

So you wanna know about Vibrators?

Vibrators are among the most popular sex toy in the USA, but not many people know much about them. Here are some quick-fire facts that’ll give you some insight

Vibrators are big business, there really is an overwhelming array on the market but what lies behind this popularity?  A good time is certainly one reason although far fewer women admit to using vibrators than do actually use them.

From rather odd and unexpected beginnings (read on), the vibrator has been around for over a century and seems to be gaining in popularity rather than decreasing.  It’s hard to imagine what could supplant it (that would take some dreaming up) so in the meantime, here are some interesting and rather unusual facts which surround this most pleasurable of sex toys.

  • If you think Trojan condoms are big sellers in the US, Trojan’ research will tell you that the vibrator market is worth $1 billion which is more than twice the size of the condom market and they should know
  • During the recession, the sale of sex toys went sky high. There were several reasons attributed to this, stress amongst young people was one, the privacy of online shopping another
  • Men maintain that they are not threatened by the use of vibrators which could account for their popularity but do women really believe this?
  • Durex did a study and found the highest ownership of vibrators was in New Zealand with nearly 4 in 10 admitting to at least one vibrator in the bedroom
  • Vibrators were invented by Victorian doctors to manage chronic anxiety in women – an interesting choice of remedy. The prescription apparently was pelvic finger massage which became mechanised alongside many other things and is told with more than a touch of humour in the film, Hysteria.  The vibrator was genuinely regarded as a serious medical instrument but, of course, news spreads fast especially good news and soon perfectly unanxious and unhysterical Victorian women were after one of these for themselves.  The idea was patented in 1883 by a London doctor, Dr J Mortimer Granville, and was a staple in the Victorian home well ahead of the hoover and the electric iron
  • Sex toys are not regulated in the US so be really careful about the material your vibrator is made from as some of them are most certainly not body-safe. Silicone vibrators are the safest but only use them with water-based lube otherwise you will end up in a sticky mess
  • The rabbit version originated in Japan and because strict laws forbade making anything that was penis-shaped, the industry found a workaround by fashioning vibrators in the shape of cute animals
  • Long-distance, remote and online, the We-Vibe even has its own app which can be controlled from the other side of the world
  • If men are buying for their ladies then pink is the colour of choice
  • Vibrators seemed to drop off the curve in the early years of the 20th century after the First World War as once they were perceived as an instrument of pleasure rather than a medical device, prudish society rather turned its back on them. They did, of course, come galloping back in the 1960s
  • Sex and the City gave the vibrator a really good plug with its Rampant Rabbit, a real invention of the 1990s and which made it into the story in 1998 fuelled by Ann Summers, the sex shop empire. going online a year later meaning that the floodgates opened for totally discrete and private vibrator shopping
  • In the UK, the sales of vibrators continue to outpace those of washing machines and tumble dryers combined, an analogy which is not lost on the sharp-witted

From rather unusual beginnings, the humble vibrator has had a really interesting and unexpected story and this is doubtless set to continue as attitudes towards sex became ever more open and the ease of online shopping means even the shy can still buy a little piece of fun.
